Counseling Services
The UCC operates from a step care model that emphasizes a brief, solution-focused approach to treatment. Through this framework, the skilled and knowledgeable counselors working at the UCC help students get from point A (the problem that leads them to seek services) to point B (the resolution of that problem) in the most direct and efficient way possible.
Counseling services include crisis intervention, Drop-in services, individual and group counseling, 24/7 phone consultations through the UCC Talkline, psychiatric care for medication management, and referrals to off-campus treatment providers. All counseling services are free of charge to degree-seeking students currently enrolled at the University of Notre Dame and to international non-degree seeking students.
All UCC counselors provide nonjudgmental and compassionate support. Counselors also strive for inclusivity and are committed to responding to student needs through the lens of psychological science. Counselors can serve as a sounding-board for decision making or can help students develop tools and strategies for coping with a variety of problems. Some UCC counselors are masters or doctoral student interns specializing in counseling or clinical psychology who work under the supervision of licensed psychologists. The UCC also employs counselors who are receiving supervision to obtain full clinical licensure in their field.
Crisis Services
The UCC is committed to helping Notre Dame students who are in crisis, and counselors are available to speak with students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Drop-in Services
Students access UCC services for the first time through the Drop-in system, which allows students to address a specific concern or determine what services might fit their needs.
Individual Counseling
The UCC provides confidential, short-term individual counseling that involves students meeting one-on-one with a counselor for 45 to 50 minutes in one or more individual sessions.
Group Counseling
The UCC hosts a variety of group counseling experiences each semester that are led by counselors with experience and training in group counseling.
24/7 Talkline
Students can call the UCC Talkline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to reach a licensed counselor who can provide immediate assistance by phone. Simply call 574-631-TALK.
Psychiatric Services
Psychiatric services are available to all students through the UCC with a referral from a UCC or UHS provider.
Off-campus Referrals
At times, students may want or need mental health services that are beyond the scope of the services provided at the UCC. Students who require specialized or more intensive treatment are sometimes best served by providers in the local community.
Sexual Assault Support
The UCC provides confidential individual and group counseling to any student who has been sexually assaulted or subjected to sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and/or conduct that creates a hostile environment.
