All students new to the UCC access services for the first time through the UCC Drop-in system, which allows students to meet with a counselor to address a specific concern or to determine what UCC services might best fit their needs. The Drop-in system provides access to counseling services without having to wait days or even weeks for a scheduled first appointment.

Drop-in appointments are available during specific hours on a first come, first served basis by simply “dropping in” to the UCC office on the third floor of Saint Liam Hall. Please allow approximately 60 minutes to complete a Drop-in appointment, which includes completing the paperwork noted below.

Drop-in Hours:

  • Mondays: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays: Crisis Only, no drop-in available.

Students who are already connected to the UCC are also welcome to utilize Drop-in services as-needed for immediate concerns. However, if students would like to see the same counselor they worked with in the past, please call the UCC at 574-631-7336 to schedule an appointment with that counselor. If students would prefer to work with a different counselor or have an immediate need, please stop by during Drop-in hours.

When students arrive for a Drop-in appointment they can expect to complete several forms. These initial questionnaires are a way for UCC staff to learn more about the student and their concerns, and the information provided will help guide the Drop-in appointment. To aid in the process of completing the initial forms, students can read the Consent To Treatment form prior to their arrival to Drop-in hours.

After completing the forms, students are added to the list of students requesting a Drop-in appointment and will be seen by the next available counselor. Wait times for Drop-in appointments vary, but students can typically expect to wait 15 minutes to see a counselor. The front office staff will alert students to unusually long wait times upon their arrival. Students are also welcome to call the UCC at 574-631-7336 and check on the estimated wait time. Typically, students experience the longest wait times between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Drop-in appointments are focused on students’ current situation and the changes they would like to see in their lives. Some students find that talking through things during a Drop-in appointment is sufficient and further involvement with the UCC is unnecessary. Others may decide that some additional services like individual or group counseling can help them explore and address their concerns.

Students who are unsure if they need counseling but could benefit from one-on-one support should consider using the 24/7 Talkline.
