Group Counseling
The UCC hosts a variety of group counseling experiences each semester that are led by counselors with experience and training in group counseling. Some groups focus on helping students to learn more about themselves in the context of their relationships while others focus on a specific type of problem to help participants learn to better manage a specific concern or difficulty. Skill-based groups are designed to teach participants effective life strategies to enhance resilience and often involve more teaching and less group participation.
Regardless of the focus area, group counseling provides the opportunity for students to be real with one another in a safe and supportive environment and the reassurance that they are not alone.
Counseling groups are open to all students. Groups are typically organized at the start of each semester and meet weekly or, in the case of skill-based groups, a specified number of sessions. Some groups fill to capacity within the first month of the semester and others remain open to new members up until the last few weeks. Skill-based groups are often repeated multiple times each semester. To benefit from group counseling, students are encouraged to make a commitment to attend the group regularly.
Students interested in participating in group counseling are encouraged to stop by the UCC during Drop-in hours to discuss group counseling options and set up a group information session with the group facilitator. The group information session allows the student to ask questions and the facilitator to outline expectations and discuss goals for group treatment. The meeting also helps students to enter the first group session with greater confidence.
Students can also be referred to group counseling during individual counseling. You can review current groups here.
